Charles Frank Bolden Jr. is a former Administrator of NASA, a retired United States Marine Corps Major General, and a former astronaut who flew on four Space Shuttle missions. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1968. Bolden became a Marine aviator and test pilot. Space missions: STS-31, STS-61-C, STS-45, STS-60. Aug 19, 1946

Edward Joseph Dwight Jr. is an American sculptor, author, and former test pilot. He is the first African American to have entered the Air Force training program from which NASA selected astronauts. He was controversially not selected to officially join NASA. Rank: Captain US air force. Sep 9, 1933

Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer, retired United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, in which capacity he became the first African American to go to space. While assigned to NASA, he remained a USAF officer rising to the rank of colonel. Space missions: STS 8, STS 61 A, STS 39, STS-53. Nov 22, 1942

Jeanette Jo Epps is an American aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut. Epps received both her M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland, where she was part of the rotor-craft research group and was a NASA GSRP Fellow. Joan Elizabeth Higginbotham is an electrical engineer and a former NASA astronaut. She flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-116 as a mission specialist and is the third African American woman to travel into space, after Mae Jemison and Stephanie Wilson. Leland Devon Melvin is an American engineer and a retired NASA astronaut. He served on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on STS-122, and as mission specialist 1 on STS-129. Melvin was named the NASA Associate Administrator for Education in October 2010. Space missions: STS-122, STS-129 Feb 15, 1964.

Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and NASA astronaut. She became the first African-American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Space missions STS-47. Oct 17, 1956

Michael Phillip Anderson was a United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut. Anderson and his six fellow crew members were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the craft disintegrated during its reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. Ronald Erwin McNair was an American NASA astronaut and physicist. He died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-51-L, in which he was serving as one of three mission specialists in a crew of seven. Space missions STS-41-B STS-51-L. Oct 21, 1950

Stephanie Diana Wilson is an American engineer and a NASA astronaut. She flew to space onboard three Space Shuttle missions. Stephanie is the second African American woman to go into space, after Mae Jemison. Space missions: STS 121, STS 131, STS 120. Sep 27, 1966

Victor Jerome Glover is a NASA astronaut of the class of 2013 and Pilot on the first operational flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon to the International Space Station. Glover is a captain and FA 18 pilot in the U.S. Navy and is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. Space missions: Artemis 2, SpaceX Crew 1, Expedition 64, Expedition 65. Apr 30, 1976

Yvonne Darlene Cagle is an American physician, professor, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, and NASA Astronaut. Cagle joined NASA as an astronaut in 1996. She is one of six African American female astronauts. Apr 24, 1959
